Qualified Disaster

The information in this section transfers from the federal 1099R-2 Screen.
This section is used to identify 1099R distributions which are subject to the Disaster rules treatment to allocate income over a 3-year period.
For
2024
distributions, Schedule CA(540) and Schedule CA(540NR) assume the distribution qualifies for Disaster rules treatment if:
  • the year of qualified disaster is
    2024
    ;
  • the disaster is attributable to Coronavirus or California Wildfires; and
  • the taxpayer has not elected out of 3 year income averaging.
For 1099R distributions that do not qualify for Disaster rules treatment, Schedule CA(540) and Schedule CA(540NR) treat the entire taxable portion as taxable in the current year, resulting in an addition to federal IRA income or Pension income on the form.
Use the
Disaster rules treatment (Force)
field on the CA1099R-2 Screen to force the treatment of current year distributions.
Schedule CA(540) and Schedule CA(540NR) do not automatically adjust for IRA distributions and pensions for qualified disasters that occurred in prior years. You may still need to use the CAAdj screen to force the adjustment amount, depending on whether California allows or does not allow Disaster rules treatment. For
2024
Form 540NR filers, you must still use the CAAdj screen to force the current year instate source amount if California allows Disaster rules treatment on a 1099R distribution.
