E-file and attach Form 8865

Follow these steps to e-file and attach Form 8865 to a Form 1120 e-file return. You can file Form 8865 electronically only if it's attached to the filer's Form 990, 1040, 1120, 1120S, 1065, or 1041 return. You can't e-file Form 8865 separately.
  1. Create the electronic file for the Form 8865 return as you would for any other electronic return.
    note
    • You need to create and attach all Form 8865 electronic files before you create the 1120 electronic return.
    • All Form 8865 electronic files should pass UltraTax CS error checking before you attach them to the e-file return.
  2. With the 1120 client's return open, select
    Edit
    , then
    Electronic Filing Attachments
    .
  3. Select
    Add
    .
  4. In the
    Product
     field, select
    Federal
     from the dropdown.
  5. In the
    Return
     field, select
    Tax Return
     from the dropdown.
  6. In the
    Attachment title
     field, select
    8865 E-file
     from the dropdown.
  7. In the Attachment file source group section, select
    8865
    , then
    Browse
    , and go to and select the Form 8865 electronic file. The electronic file will have a
    .xef
     extension.
    note
    • The 8865 electronic file is located in
      X:\Wincsi\UTXXData\$SYSDATA\attachments
       (replace XX with the year of UltraTax CS you're using).
    • If you're running UltraTax CS through Virtual Office CS or Software as a Service (SaaS), go to
      Y:\UTXXData\$SYSDATA\attachments
       (replace XX with the year of UltraTax CS you're using) and select the XEF file. This location is selected by default when you select
      Browse
      .
    • If you want to proforma this attachment next year, mark the
      Proforma information to next year
       checkbox.
  8. Select
    OK
     to return to the Electronic Filing Attachments window.
  9. Repeat steps 2 through 8 to attach more 8865 forms.
  10. Select
    OK
     when you're finished.
  11. Create the electronic file for the return. UltraTax CS will include Form 8865 in the electronic file.
