Resolve orphaned input screens

When input screens aren't associated with a defined activity folder, you'll get an error message when you open a client. It will ask you to resolve the issue and informs you that the orphaned input screens are in the red
Orphaned
folder.
Error message:
UltraTax CS has encountered 1 or more input screens that aren't associated with a defined activity, and has placed them in the Orphaned folder. Please change their form and/or unit, or delete them entirely. Close and reopen the client.
This can happen if data is coming into the return and the unit that it was originally associated to no longer exists. An example would be 4562 information for a Rental and the Rental activity no longer exists. To avoid creating orphaned data in the future, make sure to dispose of all assets related to an activity that is disposed of by either selling, transferring, retiring, or putting out-of-service all assets.
To resolve orphaned input screens:
  1. Open the client.
  2. Select
    OK
to close the error message regarding orphaned input screens.
  3. Select the
    Orphaned
folder. Each input screen unit that isn't associated with a defined activity folder is represented by an input screen tab.
  4. For each orphaned input screen, you can do the following:
    1. Delete the input screen by selecting
      Edit
      , then
      Delete Screen Data
      .
    2. Assign the input screen to an activity by adding a unit for the activity where the Description and unit number matches what's in the
      Orphaned
      folder.
  5. Repeat Step 4 for each orphaned input screen.
  6. Close then reopen the client. You shouldn't get the error message again and the
    Orphaned
folder should not appear in the folders block.
If your client doesn't have asset information entered, do the following steps:
  1. Close your client.
  2. Right-click on
    Start
    and select
    Explore
    .
  3. Go to
    X:\WinCSI\DeprData
, where X is the drive letter where the data is stored.
  4. Delete the client's folder. Note that this won't delete any tax information, only data related to assets/depreciation.
  5. Select
    File
    , then
    Close
    .
  6. Select
    File
    , then
    Open
to open your client in UltraTax CS, and you shouldn't get the Orphaned folder message.
If your client did have asset information entered and the orphan folder can't be deleted or reassigned successfully, do the following steps to eliminate the orphan folder:
  1. Go to the
    Asset
tab from any of the existing units.
  2. Select
    Edit
    , then
    Reassign Assets
    .
  3. In the
    Activity
    dropdown in the
    Focus
    area, select
    Unknown
    .
  4. Select the assets that appear and reassign them to the
    Misc
    Activity.
  5. Go to the
    Asset
    tab under the
    Non Calculating
    folder and delete the assets.
Due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, you might find an orphaned folder with the
QBI
tab. This can happen if there's an activity in Fixed Assets that doesn't appear in UltraTax CS, even if the activity has zero assets. When this happens, you won't find any assets when you go to
Edit
, then
Reassign assets
. To resolve this, take the following steps.
  1. Review the
    Orphaned
    folder in UltraTax CS.
  2. Make a note of the form (such as Page 1, E).
  3. Open the client in Fixed Assets CS and go to
    Setup
    , then
    Activities
    .
  4. Review all activities that match the form you noted in step 2.
  5. If a form and unit number doesn't exist in UltraTax CS:
    1. Review the activity in Fixed Assets to verify there are no assets.
    2. Go to
      Setup
      , then
      Activity
and delete the activity that doesn't exist in UltraTax CS.
