Error: Cannot open client — no data files exist

Scenario

You may get the following error messages when opening an UltraTax CS client.
Error messages
Cannot open client: No data files exist for this client
Cannot open client. Does not exist.

Solution 1: Fixed Assets CS

If you get this error in a Fixed Assets CS client and the client is also in UltraTax CS:
  1. Open the UltraTax CS client
  2. Go to the
    Asset
    tab.
  3. Try to open the Fixed Assets CS client again.

Solution 2: Check other data locations

The client data may have been moved.
If you have multiple UltraTax CS data locations:
  1. Select
    File
    , then
    Client
    .
  2. Select another
    Data location
    .
  3. Search for the client in the list.
  4. Repeat these steps for each data location.
If you don't have multiple locations or still can't find the client, you can search your computer or network files in Windows. Client data files are named with the Client ID, so try entering the first few characters or numbers into a search. If you find the client data folder, copy and paste it back into the correct UltraTax CS data location, then select
Help
,
Repair
, then
Rebuild Client List
to bring the client back in to the application.

Solution 3: Try another profile

Sign in to your computer with another Windows account and try to open the client. If it opens, you could have a corrupt user profile or a permissions issue.

Solution 4: Check the data files

  1. Go to the client's data directory:
    • UltraTax
      CS: X:\WinCSI\UTYYData
      , where
      X
represents the drive letter or network location where the the data is stored and YY represents the year of UltraTax CS.
    • Fixed Assets
      CS: X:\WinCSI\DeprData
      , where
      X
represents the drive letter or network location where the the data is stored.
  2. Open the client ID folder.
  3. Search for a file that ends in
    .UTY_
    or
    .UT_
    . The
    Y
in the file name will be replaced with the last digit of the year of UltraTax CS. If either file exists:
    1. Right-click the
      .UTY
      file and rename it to
      .UTY.old
      .
    2. Right-click the
      .UTY_
      file and rename it to
      .UTY
      , where
      Y
represents the last digit of the year of UltraTax CS.
  4. If neither file exists, you'll need to restore the client from a backup.
