Error: UltraTax CS has stopped working error

Scenario

When operating UltraTax CS in a network environment, you might get the following error when trying to open client files. The UltraTax CS application then closes shortly after the appearance of the error message.
Error message:
The application UltraTax CS has stopped working

Solution

While it's a generic error message, if you're able to open the UltraTax CS application but unable to open a client, this error is often a resolved by disabling the User Account Controls (UAC) security feature within your Windows operating system:
  1. Access Microsoft KB 975787.
  2. Follow the steps listed in the Microsoft KB to move UAC to the lowest setting (disabled) within Windows 7 / 8 / 10.
  3. Restart the workstation.
  4. Run the desktop setup installation.
