Troubleshooting tips for slow performance

If you experience slow performance with UltraTax CS, try these troubleshooting tips. If one troubleshooting tip doesn't work, continue to the next tip.
When troubleshooting performance issues, make sure you determine where the issue lies. For example, is the program slow only on one workstation? For only one user? The questions listed below can help you determine the source of the issue:
  • What process is slow (Example: opening the program, opening a client, switching between input screens and forms)?
  • Are all workstations experiencing the performance issue?
  • Are all users experiencing the performance issue?
  • If the program is installed locally on a workstation, rather than on the network, is there still a performance issue?
Also, to prevent future performance issues, review your network settings.

Program Settings

  • If you're on a network, open UltraTax CS.
    • Select
      Setup
      ,
      User Preferences
      , then
      Misc
      .
    • Mark the
      Improve performance using local drive
      checkbox.
    • When prompted, select your local drive and select
      OK
      .
    • A message states you won't see any results until you leave and restart the program.
    • Select
      OK
      then select
      OK
      again.
    • Close then reopen the application.
    • Monitor the application's performance to see if this change corrected or helped your issue. If so, you'll need to complete this process on each user's workstation.
  • If you're licensed for FileCabinet CS and have the program installed, verify that your data path is correctly set in FileCabinet CS.
    • If the data path is incorrect, then the program can run slowly.
    • To verify the data path, select
      Setup
      ,
      User Preferences
      , then
      File Locations
      .
  • If your firm is also licensed for Fixed Assets CS and you recently migrated to a new server, try reinstalling Fixed Assets CS Desktop.
    • To do this, go to your
      Start
      menu and select
      Run
      .
    • Enter
      X:\wincsi\dsw\desktop
and run the setup.exe file. (x=drive letter where your program is installed).

System Troubleshooting Tips Outside Program Settings

  • Virus Scanning Software
    • If your anti-virus software is configured to scan the contents of the WinCSI directory, the software may interfere with the performance of UltraTax CS. To correct this, exclude the WinCSI directory from being scanned.
  • Opportunistic Locking
    • This feature can slow down UltraTax CS performance if it's turned on. Refer to our topic on opportunistic locking for more information.
  • Client Side Caching
    • This is term for the
      Offline Files
feature in Windows. It's most widely known as offline files only, but the cache location is called CSC under the Windows directory.
    • If turned on, this can slow down CS Professional Suite applications' performance.
  • End Task Applications
    • When you're working at a computer, different processes are running in the background that you may not need. You can close many of these processes so that only required processes are running.
    • The procedure for closing these processes is different for each operating system, so you should consult your Network Administrator before completing this troubleshooting tip.
  • Temporary Files
    • During normal use, and especially during internet use, applications create temporary files that aren't needed once the application or file is closed. These temporary files pile up on your system, taking up resources.
    • Use the search field on your taskbar and enter
      Disk Cleanup
then select the application. Mark the areas you want to delete and select
      OK
. This permanently deletes these files from your system and frees space on your hard drive.
  • Screen Savers
    • Screen savers can use a lot of resources, so when troubleshooting a speed issue, you should turn off any screen saver running.
