Data locations

You can have 1 or more firm data locations and a personal data location in UltraTax CS to store, access, and transfer information.

Firm data location

Most firms have office-wide files, such as client documents and invoices, in one location. Although it's not typical, a single firm can add multiple data locations. For example, a firm may want to add a separate data location for each preparer.
The Data locations tab in
Setup
then
System Configuration
 is where you'll maintain your firm-wide locations.
Computer hard drives (C: drive) and servers are the main places you store UltraTax CS data. Third-party cloud storage services that don't support Microsoft remote desktop services (such as Dropbox) aren't supported as active data locations for CS Professional Suite Applications. Using these services for live application or client data can lead to corrupt client data, slow performance, application crashes, and read/write errors.

Office share or branch license data locations

If your firm has multiple offices running the same installation of UltraTax CS or has multiple firms in the same office running the same installation of UltraTax CS with an office-share licensing agreement, we recommend that you add additional offices and data locations so each office can have its own files, such as client documents and invoice pricing.

Personal data location

You may want to add a personal data location to store client information that's separate from where your firm stores client information for the following reasons: your firm creates a data location for each preparer or you need to create experimental data that you want to keep separate from actual client data.
This is separate from the data locations you have in
Setup
 then
System Configuration
. Instead go to
Setup
,
User Preferences
 then
File Locations
. Select UltraTax CS client data in the list, then select
Modify Location
. You'll have the option to set a personal location and switch between firm location(s) and your personal one.

Integrated application data locations/data paths

When your firm sets data locations in UltraTax CS and in other CS Professional Suite applications, you can share client data between them. Go to
Setup

User Preferences
, then
File Locations
. These lists show you where UltraTax CS is looking when integrating with other products (or last year's UltraTax CS for proforma purposes). You may need to modify these locations so you can integrate and/or proforma.
