New Client / Client Properties dialog

The New Client and Client Properties dialogs are almost identical.
Select the New Client button in the toolbar to open the New Client dialog in which you can add a client.
Select the Client Properties button in the toolbar& to open the Client Properties dialog in which you can update the open client's information.

Fields & buttons

Use this drop-down list to select the data location in which you want to store the new client's data. Note that you must add a data location in the Setup, System Configuration, then Data Locations tab before you can select it here.
New Client dialog:
Enter up to 11 letters or numbers for the unique client ID. Do not use embedded symbols or blanks.
Client Properties dialog:
Displays the open client's ID. You cannot edit this field. To change a client's ID, choose File then Rename to open the Rename Client dialog.
Displays the open client's name as entered in the input screen.
Select the preparer assigned to this client's return.
Select the reviewer assigned to this client's return.
Select the staff member assigned to this client's return.
By default, UltraTax CS prints your firm information, as it appears on the license agreement, in the preparer block section of all returns and extensions.
  • To leave the preparer block section of this client's returns or extensions blank, select [Blank Preparer Block] from the drop-down list.
  • To print different firm information in the preparer block section of this client's returns or extensions, select a preparer block from the drop-down list.
  • To have UltraTax CS print "Prepared by a non-paid preparer" in the preparer block of the return, choose (Personal Preparer Block) from this drop-down list.&
UltraTax CS will display the firm information that will appear in the preparer block section of all returns and extensions based on the selection made in the Preparer block drop down field.

Federal tab

New Client dialog:
To prepare a 1040 federal return for this client, select the
1040
option and then select the appropriate return type from the adjacent drop-down list. The available return types are Individual (1040), Seniors (1040SR), Self-Employment (1040PR), Self-Employment (1040SS), Nonresident Alien, Individual Same-Sex, Nonresident Alien Same-Sex, and Domestic Partner.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog. To change the type of 1040 return that you are preparing for this client, select Individual (1040), Seniors (1040SR), Self-Employment (1040PR), Self-Employment (1040SS), Nonresident Alien, Individual Same-Sex, Nonresident Alien Same-Sex, or Domestic Partner& from the drop-down list.
New Client dialog:
To prepare an 1120 federal return for this client, select the
1120
option and then select the appropriate return type from the adjacent drop-down list. The available return types are C Corporation, S Corporation, Consolidated C, Consolidated S, Cooperative Association, Foreign Corporation, Homeowner's Association, Interest Charge DISC, Political Organization, Property and Casualty Ins Co, Real Estate Investment Trust, Settlement Fund, Puerto Rico (Corporation), Puerto Rico & C Corporation, Puerto Rico & Foreign Corporation, Puerto Rico (Corp of Individuals), and Puerto Rico & S Corporation.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog. To change the type of 1120 return that you are preparing for this client, select C Corporation, S Corporation, Cooperative Association, Foreign Corporation, Homeowner's Association, Interest Charge DISC, Political Organization, Property and Casualty Ins Co, Real Estate Investment Trust, Settlement Fund,& Puerto Rico (Corporation), Puerto Rico & C Corporation, Puerto Rico & Foreign Corporation, Puerto Rico (Corp of Individuals), and Puerto Rico & S Corporation from the drop-down list.
New Client dialog:
To prepare a 1065 federal return for this client, select the
1065
option and then select the appropriate return type (Partnership, Large Ptnrshp (1065B), Foreign Ptnrshp (8865), Puerto Rico, or Puerto Rico & Partnership) from the adjacent drop-down list.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog. To change the type of 1065 return that you are preparing for this client, select Partnership, Large Ptnrshp (1065B), Puerto Rico, or Puerto Rico & Partnership from the drop-down list.
New Client dialog:
To prepare a 1041 federal return for this client, select this option.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog.
New Client dialog:
To prepare a 706 federal return for this client, select this option.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog.
New Client dialog:
To prepare a 709 federal return for this client, select this option.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog.
New Client dialog:
To prepare a 990 federal return for this client, select the
990
option and then select the appropriate return type (Exempt Organization or Private Foundation) from the adjacent drop-down list.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog. To change the type of 990 return that you are preparing for this client, select either Exempt Organization or Private Foundation from the drop-down list.
New Client dialog:
To prepare a 5500 federal return for this client, select the
5500
option and then select the appropriate return type (Benefit Plans, Benefit Plans [EZ], or Benefit Plans [SF]) from the adjacent drop-down list.
Client Properties dialog:
Only the entity type option that you selected when adding the client is enabled in this dialog. To change the type of 5500 return you are preparing for this client, select either Benefit Plans, Benefit Plans (EZ), or Benefit Plans (SF) from the drop-down list.
New Client dialog:
Enter the client's employer identification number (EIN) or Social Security number (SSN).
Client Properties dialog:
Displays the open client's EIN or SSN. You can edit the information in this field.
If you are processing this client's return with a PRP-licensed federal application, or if you have a site or network license and want to print a PRP preparer block for this client, ensure that the client's authorization code displays in either the New Client dialog (when adding the client) or the Client Properties dialog (when modifying an existing client).

State tab(s) (if applicable)

  • In the New Client dialog:
    Select the Add State(s) button and, if more than one state is available, select the desired state and choose OK. That state's tab now appears in this dialog. (Note that adding a state application that has not been downloaded or installed may take a few moments.)
  • In the Client Properties dialog:
    If you have already added a state return for the client, that state's tab appears in this dialog. To add another state return for the client, choose the Add State(s) button.

Other Fields & buttons

New Client dialog:
This field is not available in the New Client dialog.
Client Properties dialog:
This field displays the most recent status event logged by a user for this client.
New Client dialog:
This button is not available in the New Client dialog.
Client Properties dialog:
Select this button to open the Client Status dialog, where you can change client status events or schedule events.
To prepare a state or city return for the client, select this button from either the New Client dialog (when adding a client) or the Client Properties dialog (for existing clients). When you select this button, all available states are displayed, and UltraTax CS responds in one of two ways.
  • After you make your selections, any state or city applications that were not previously installed are installed automatically when you select OK. A slight delay may occur depending on the number of states that need to be installed. The selected state(s) or city tabs will then appear in the New Client or Client Properties dialog.
  • After you make your selections, any state or city applications that were previously installed are added to the client immediately when you select OK. The selected state or city tabs will then appear in the New Client or Client Properties dialog.
From either the New Client dialog or the Client Properties dialog, select this button to delete the client's state or city return. UltraTax CS prompts you to confirm that you want to delete the return.
Select this button to open the Advanced Properties dialog in which you can do the following:
  • Password-protect this client's data.
  • Exempt the E-File Status screen from Client Password protection.
  • Exempt this client from all Data Sharing functionality.
  • Deny Data Mining, Practice CS, FileCabinet CS, or data sharing access to this client's data. Marking these checkboxes will deny certain applications or features access to the open client's data. For example, to prevent FileCabinet CS from accessing this client's data, mark the
    Deny FileCabinet CS access to client data
    checkbox.
  • Select detailed asset data entry or summary asset data entry.
  • For 1120 Consolidated clients:
    Designate parent, eliminations, and subsidiary companies for this consolidated client, and restrict certain amounts from each group member's return from being combined in the consolidated client's return.
  • For 1040 Domestic Partner returns:
    Designate the taxpayer and spouse for the domestic partner return.
