Use this dialog to select the client for whom you want to enter tax data.
To open this dialog, select the Open Client button, choose File then Open Client, or choose the Family button.
note
There are two versions of this dialog, one containing summary information and one containing detailed information. Which version appears depends on which version was last open.
To switch from the summary to the detailed version, select the Detail >> button.
To switch from the detailed to the summary version, select the << No Detail button.
Fields & buttons
Data location
Use the drop-down list to select the data location containing the client data you want to open. Note that you must add a data location in the Setup, System Configuration, then Data Locations tab before you can select it here.
Search
If you select the word Client ID or Name in the title bar of the list pane, you can enter the first few characters of the client ID or client name in this field to search for a particular client.
Clients
Lists all clients who meet the criteria designated in the Focus group box. Highlight the client whose return you want to process and select the Open button.

To sort the client list by client ID, name, entity type, status event, or complexity value, select the word appropriate column heading in the title bar of the list pane. To view a detailed list of the values that make up the client's complexity rating, select the underlined number in the Complex column.

If the client's complexity rating is not displayed via the Complex column, mark the&
Display the Client Complexity factor
& checkbox in the Setup, User Preferences, then Misc tab.
Focus group box
Entity types
Mark one or more of the entity type checkboxes to include the corresponding clients in the client list.
Example:
To include only 1040 clients in the list, clear all checkboxes except the
1040
checkbox.

Mark the
Other
checkbox to include 990, 5500, 706, and 709 clients in the list.
Restore user/default focus options button
Select this button to toggle between the most recent custom focus selection and the default selection.
Preparer/reviewer/staff
Select a preparer, reviewer, or staff member from the drop-down list to limit the list to clients whose returns were assigned to a specific person.
Fiscal year end
Choose a month from this drop-down list to restrict the list of clients whose returns have the selected month as their year-end.
Event
This field displays the selected status event by which the client list is focused and the sorting criteria for that event. To limit the client list by a different status event or to change the sorting criteria, select the Modify button to open the Modify Event Focus dialog.
Modify button
Select this button to change the selection in the adjacent field.
Other buttons
<< No Detail button
Select this button to return to the summary version of this dialog.

Once opened, the summary version of this dialog appears every time you choose File, Open Client until you select the Detail >> button to return to the detailed version.
Client group box
Client: (name)
Displays the name of the client.

To change this information, open the client and change the names in the
Name
,
First Name
, and/or
Last Name
fields in the first federal input screen.
Preparer
Displays the name of the preparer assigned to this client.

To change the assigned preparer, open the client, choose File then Client Properties, and select a different preparer from the drop-down list for the
Preparer
field. You can also assign groups of clients to preparers using the Utilities then Reassign Clients dialog.
Reviewer
Displays the name of the reviewer assigned to this client.

To change the assigned preparer, open the client, choose File then Client Properties, and select a different reviewer from the drop-down list for the
Reviewer
field. You can also assign groups of clients to reviewers using the Utilities then Reassign Clients dialog.
Staff
Displays the name of the staff member assigned to this client.

To change the assigned staff member, open the client, choose File then Client Properties, and select a different staff member from the drop-down list for the
Staff
field. You can also assign groups of clients to staff members using the Utilities then Reassign Clients dialog.
Status
The current status of the selected client is displayed here.
Password
This checkbox is marked if the client's data is password protected.
Printed
Displays the date the tax return was last printed.
Federal information group box
Entity
Displays the client's federal entity type.
ELF
This checkbox is marked if the client's federal return is to be electronically filed.
FYE
Displays the client's federal fiscal year-end date. You can change this information in the client's General Information input screen.
Due
Displays the date the federal tax return is due based on fiscal year-end and extension information.
PRP
Displays the federal per-return-pricing authorization code, if applicable.

If you received the PRP code via CS Connect, it displays automatically in the Client Properties dialog (when modifying an existing client) the next time the client is opened.
If you called Customer Service at 800.968.0600 to receive the PRP code, you will incur a small fee and you must manually enter the code in the New Client dialog or in the Client Properties dialog.
State tabs (if applicable)
Entity
Displays the client's state entity type.

This field is available only if a state product has been added to the client. To do so, select the Add State(s) button in the File then New Client dialog or the File then Client Properties dialog.
ELF
This checkbox is marked if the client's state return is to be electronically filed.

Due
