Third party designee for preparers

When you choose
Yes
for
Authorize discussion with IRS
on the federal 1040 screen (or on the
Gen
screen of any state return), the third-party designee will default to the paid preparer on the tax return.
Go to
Setup
,
Office Configuration
, then the
Preparers
tab. On this tab you can:
  • Edit the designee information for the paid preparer.
  • Specify that the designee is different for all clients assigned to that preparer.

Default to preparer

If you want the preparer to be the default designee for all clients assigned to them, verify the following:
  • You've completed all preparer information, including the
    Designee PIN
    .
  • You've selected
Preparer (above) is the default designee
    .
When the third-party designee is the paid preparer, the box in the Paid Preparer section of Form 1040 will be marked. If you're filing a non-resident alien return (1040NR or 1040NR-EZ), the 3rd party designee section will be completed on the return.

Default to someone else

If you want the designee to be someone other than the preparer for all clients assigned to that preparer:
  1. Mark the
Someone other than the preparer is the default designee
checkbox in the Third Party Designee section
  2. Complete the information.

Client-by-client basis

You can override third-party designee information on a client-by-client basis (for example, to designate a family member). In the client's return, go to the
Contact
screen in the General folder and complete the Third Party Designee section. The data you enter here will supersede the global setup you have entered by going to
Setup
, then
Office Configuration
.
You can set the designee option for all new 1040 clients or 1040 clients converted from another application, then override it on a client-by-client basis.
  1. Select
    Setup
    ,
    1040 Individual
    , then
    New Client Options
    .
  2. Choose
    Yes
    or
    No
    from
