The Thomson Reuters Institute launches a new AI in Courts Resource Center to provide judges, legal professionals, and policymakers with insights on responsibly integrating AI into the justice system
The Thomson Reuters Institute launches its new AI in Courts Resource Center today. This innovative hub explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and the justice system and aims to provide judges, legal clerks, court administrators, and policymakers with invaluable insights into the rapidly evolving landscape of AI as well as the inherent value in using AI responsibly in the courtroom.
The Resource Center is structured around three key pillars, and each of these areas will offer a wealth of information and guidance for those navigating the complex world of AI in court settings:
-
-
- Best Practices in Court and Administration — This section delves into the practical applications of AI within court systems themselves. The resources here will highlight the opportunities and challenges of implementing AI. In addition, this pillar also will emphasize the need for continued education and innovation to keep pace with technological progress.
- AI for Justice — In this pillar, the focus is on how AI can be harnessed to enhance legal aid services and empower those individuals or groups that are most in need to better address the access to justice gap. Today, in which roughly two-thirds of litigants appear in US courts without lawyers, this section will demonstrate how AI can supercharge legal service organizations and provide them with tools to serve their clients more efficiently and effectively.
- AI Governance — This section addresses the critical need for ethical guidelines and governance frameworks around the implementation of AI in court systems. This pillar explores the legal and moral implications of AI adoption for judges and court administrators. It also details the key ingredients of AI governance mechanisms that are needed to address common ethical issues, which include bias and fairness, accuracy, privacy, and safety.

Collaboration with NCSC
Overall, the creation of the AI in Courts Resource Center is part of the Thomson Reuters Institute’s larger effort to implement AI responsibly and effectively in the nation’s court system. Since August 2024, the Thomson Reuters Institute has been partnering with the National Center of State Courts (NCSC) to set out how courts can use AI for increased efficiency and effectiveness, while better serving their constituents. Part of this collaboration includes the creation of a safe environment for court users to experiment with AI and the delivery of monthly webinars.
