Thomson Reuters delivers key milestone in its AI strategy, introducing next-gen CoCounsel with deeper product integrations to five new markets

New product integrations with the next generation of CoCounsel, our professional-grade GenAI assistant, delivers Westlaw Precision, Practical Law and ONESOURCE customers a more connected experience

SYDNEY, MARCH 13, 2025 - Thomson Reuters (TSX/Nasdaq: TRI), a global content and technology company, today marks significant progress against its AI strategy, announcing the internationalisation of the next generation of CoCounsel to five new markets. Customers in Australia and New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the United Arab Emirates now have access to a professional-grade GenAI assistant, enabling firms to accelerate growth by making more informed decisions, streamlining entire workflows, and saving time.

Built on a combination of trusted content, decades of AI innovation, and over 4,500 domain experts, our professional-grade GenAI assistant is now available across flagship solutions; Westlaw Precision, Practical Law, and ONESOURCE. Meeting professionals where they work, CoCounsel helps to pinpoint key knowledge in vast databases, thoroughly communicate sophisticated information, and complete essential work with unprecedented speed.

AI early adopters have cited the importance of ongoing support throughout the AI lifecycle, from adoption to implementation and employee training. Thomson Reuters customers are supported at every stage of their AI transformation with access to experts in regionally based teams with deep knowledge of local market considerations.

“It’s predicted that GenAI is set to free up 12 hours per wee  k for professionals within the next five years. To make this a reality, professionals need to trust that AI will perform to the same standards they expect from their peers,” says Vishal Bali, Managing Director of Asia and Emerging Markets at Thomson Reuters. “We are creating a connected ecosystem where customers can access the best cutting-edge technology, trusted content, and human expertise to drive real value in their businesses today and prepare for tomorrow with confidence. The significant internationalisation and integration of CoCounsel across our legal, tax and compliance product portfolio demonstrates that commitment.”

Future-proofing firms

Today, CoCounsel optimizes for and combines the strengths of leading LLMs, enabling professionals to realise the greatest value from GenAI by accelerating and streamlining entire workflows.

The latest version of CoCounsel sets the standard for how GenAI can drive real impact for legal and tax professionals. With the latest released features, it will:

  • Work three times   faster than the first generation of CoCounsel, generating answers in seconds, not minutes.
  • Operate more intuitively, with a better understanding of the ways customers naturally communicate, and an improved ability to make sense of documents.
  • Deliver more thorough, nuanced results, because it will be able to consider the full context and history of more difficult, sophisticated requests.
  • Be accessible from within Thomson Reuters products, starting with Westlaw Precision and Practical Law for legal professionals, and ONESOURCE for corporate tax customers.
  • Be accessible from within Microsoft 365, beginning with Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Be able to access customer documents directly, through server-to-server integrations with data storage solutions iManage, NetDocuments, and SharePoint.
  • Offer High Volume, for teams needing to automate the review of hundreds of thousands or even millions of documents, with human level accuracy. This capability was successfully deployed on an as-needed basis but will now be available to all CoCounsel users.

Delivering professional-grade GenAI with expanded legal skills

CoCounsel will also bring additional and upgraded capabilities for legal professionals. The newly launched Search and Summarise Practical Law answers natural-language queries with a synthesised response and provides tailored resources to help customers move forward with confidence. The integration with Westlaw Precision Australia with AI-Assisted Research is putting relevant insights in the fingertips of our customers to help them solve their clients’ problems with unparalleled accuracy and speed. Further CoCounsel integrations across our legal suite are planned for this year, including HighQ.

On the transformative impact of AI in the legal industry, Dennis Tuan-Mu, General Counsel of The Ascott Limited, said: "For as long as legal teams have existed, there has been a chasm between the demand for legal expertise and the time available to deliver it.  AI is bridging that gap and changing the game.  As a leader in accommodation and franchising, our legal teams’ ability to deliver strategic guidance to facilitate Ascott and Quest’s rapid growth is imperative.  We are currently working closely with Thomson Reuters to develop a customised legal platform that will enable our legal professionals to make faster, smarter decisions backed by accurate and relevant insights.”

Equipping tax professionals with AI to navigate increasing complexity and market volatility

As multinational corporations face evolving regulatory challenges and talent shortages, corporates appetite for access to real-time insights and tools that enable swift action is growing. Thomson Reuters is now combining the trusted content in ONESOURCE with CoCounsel to augment professionals’ work. The offering combines CoCounsel with a new AI Product Support Skill to give ONESOURCE customers ‘how-to’ guidance on complex compliance tasks and offers instant access to relevant answers.

CoCounsel capabilities have so far been incorporated into ONESOURCE Indirect Tax and Direct Tax solutions, with further tax and trade solutions arriving later in 2025.

This announcement was shared with customers at the annual SYNERGY Sydney event, designed exclusively for Thomson Reuters Australian ecosystem, taking place on March 13.
